Description

Allantoin Powder is skincare ingredient with moisturizing, soothing and exfoliating properties. It can be found on the ingredient list of diverse personal and bodycare products including serums, lotions, shampoos, shaving products, sunscreens and more.

Allantoin is used in skin care products for its skin conditioning and soothing and properties. It also helps the skin to better tolerate other ingredients used.

Ingredient Function: Humectant/ Moisturizer, Soothing, Occlusive, Exfoliating

Derived From: Comfrey plant and also found in other plants such as Sugar Beet and Horse Chestnut

Appearance: White to off-white powder

Smell: None

Solubility: Allantoin Powder is water-soluble. It’s not oil soluble

PH: 4 to 6 in a 0.5% solution in water

Storage: Store in a cool, dark, and dry place

Shelf Life: 2 Years

Usage Rate: 0.1-0.5%, up to 2% [Allantoin is insoluble when used at above 0.5%]

• Lotions & Creams: 0.5% to 2%
• Bar Soaps: 0.5% to 2%
• Lip Balms: 0.5% to 2%

 

Formulation Notes:

• Best used at below 0.5% concentration. When more than 0.5% is used, Allantoin Powder will be hard to dissolve and the finished product will be gritty/ grainy;
• Add Allantoin Powder to either your water phase or cool down phase
  • Incorporate to your water phase at low temperature, around room temperature [below 50°C (122°F))], and then heat to 60-90°C to further dissolve it, stirring vigorously
  • Allantoin can also be incorporated at the cool-down phase (below 50°C) of a formulation. Ensure to blend vigorously to ensure it fully dissolves;
• To Avoid Crystallization: Adding Allantoin to a formulation at high temperatures and quickly cooling it can cause it to crystallize and create a gritty and irritating final product
• Stir/ blend dissolved Alantoin Powder vigorously and thoroughly to ensure proper mixing
• Final PH: Allantoin is stable in formulations at PH 3 to 8
• Allantoin is known to sometimes recrystallize in formulations. When formulating with Allantoin, be careful to stay within the recommended temperature guides in order to ensure that it properly dissolves and not recrystallize
