Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (SCI) Powder

Description

Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (SCI) is a mild anionic surfactant derived from coconut oil. It is used to formulate solid cleansing products and opaque liquid cleansing products. SCI is dubbed ‘baby foam’ and ‘baby lather’ due to its mildness.

Derived From: Coconuts, sodium isethionate

Appearance: Comes in fine powder form or granules, and also comes in flakes or noodles, depending on availability

Colour: White to off-white

Smell: Soapy, detergent odour

Ingredient Function: Cleaning agent/ foaming ingredient

Solubility: Soluble in hot water; partly soluble in cold water

Storage: Store in a tightly sealed container, in a dark and dry ventilated place, away from moisture

Shelf Life: 4 years, when properly stored

Usage Rate: 1-10%, up to 40% [Solid bars – 30%; Liquid soaps – 5 to 15% for a start]

PH Range: 4.5-6.5 (in 10% solution)

ASM (Active Surfactant Matter): 85%

Polarity: Anionic

Formulation Notes:

• Add to the Surfactant Phase of your formulation [Mix SCI with other surfactants (anionic or nonionic)]
•  It needs to first be dissolved in a suitable solvent before using it in a formulation
• How to dissolve SCI: Combine it with the liquid amphoteric surfactant(s) in your recipe (such as Cocamidopropyl Betaine or other), and then heat in a water-bath until there’s a a uniform paste. This paste will dissolve in water
• Hydrous formulations including SCI (Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate) should have a pH of 6 to 8
