Is White Willow Bark Powder Really White In Colour?

The name “white willow” refers to the pale/ light-coloured underside of the leaves. However, the bark itself is not white in colour.

Formulation Notes/ Guidelines:

  • Add Willow Bark Powder to the water phase of your formulation
  • Willow Bark combined with Vitamin C: Both Willow Bark Powder and Vitamin C are acidic in nature, and so when combined in a formulation, Willow Bark extract becomes unstable.
  • Willow Bark combined with Niacinamide: The Salicylic Acid component of Willow Bark becomes ineffective if Willow Bark is combined with Salicylic Acid, not absorbed by the skin. This could cause skin redness.
  • Persons allergic to Aspirin should avoid skincare with Willow Bark extract, or first consult their Doctor to confirm if a skincare containing Willow Bark extract is suitable for them (Salicin, the major ingredient in Willow Bark, is similar to the main ingredient in Aspirin).

White vs Black Willow Bark

Both Black and White Bark species contain Salicin. Salicin is converted to Salicylic Acid in the body.

Both black and white Willow bark offer similar benefits to the skin, including exfoliation.

White Willow Bark contains a higher concentration of Salicin than black willow bark, hence it’s higher in Salicylic Acid content.

Both species of the Willow Trees are rich in the ingredient ‘Salicin’, from which Salicylic Acid (a BHA/ Beta Hydroxy Acid) is derived. Our bodies convert Salicin into Salicylic Acid.  Salicin is a milder version of Salicylic Acid.
